Merit Pay Information
Pat Gardner,Barry Dubin along with Chris Mayer (Ashton) and Cory Williams (Laurel Nokomis) were in Tallahassee to file a lawsuit which could shape the face of collective bargaining for every Florida teacher and classified employee for generations to come. While on its face the case challenges the state's new merit pay bill, the lawsuit is really about collective bargaining and what it means to you. In passing SB 736 last year, the Florida Legislature passed a bill that mandates what our salary schedule must look like, how the district's salary pool must be allocated among the district's nearly 3,000 teachers, what conditions will govern teacher transfer and layoff, and how teachers will be evaluated. What makes this legislative intrusion in our everyday work lives so significant is that it clearly violates our right to engage in collective bargaining that is spelled out in the Florida Constitution.
